TV tech brings the world together

The latest camera technologies can capture thousands of images every second and can even “see” colour in near-total darkness. Beneficial not just for sports programming, such advances have transformed documentary filmmaking with the ability to capture stunning images of wildlife and the natural world. Thanks to these technological advances, television productions now rival cinema in terms of image quality.

The invention of television changed our media landscape forever. But in today’s hyper connected world, what is TV anymore? Is television still television, on a portable screen? The United Nations celebrates World Television Day on 21 November. The World Television Day is celebrated around the globe on November 21 and it is recognized as a key tool for informing the public on the important and evolving role of TV in our lives. Even with the rise of mobile internet and online video viewing, traditional television broadcasting is still a mass media reaching billions of viewers.

WORLD TV DAY

What We Do

In recognition of the increasing impact television has on decision-making by bringing world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security. The United Nations and its Agencies invite major international broadcasters to join in distribution partnerships that offer a full range of bold, engaging and diverse television programming. The UN welcomes innovative ideas for collaboration in the form of co-productions, new genres or TV formats that will enable us to diversify our audience.

  • Fostering public understanding of the work of the United Nations and its goals.
  • Reaching audiences and supporting the work of the international news media.

UN News audio products range from our Monday-Friday ‘News In Brief’, where we summarize the key stories of the day, to our flagship podcast series, ‘The Lid Is On’. We aim to bring you fresh interviews daily with UN agency newsmakers, opinion-formers, academics, NGOs and activists who are working through the UN. We will continue with our specialist shows on gender issues and Africa, as part of our expanding stable of in-depth podcasts, which also includes our ‘Podcast Classics’ from the rich audio archive of UN Radio, stretching back to the 1940s. UNITED NATIONS CHRONICLE

Individual issues focused on a wide variety of topics, including human rights, humanitarian concerns, and matters related to human settlements and climate change. The UN Chronicle, produced by the United Nations Department of Global Communications, has served as the Organization’s flagship magazine since 1946, providing authoritative information and debate on the activities of the larger United Nations system. The print edition was discontinued following the publication of a special 2018 double issue. The magazine was moved to an all-digital format on 1 January 2019.

The new, exclusively web-based UN Chronicle, launched in August 2019, continues to feature authoritative articles from a wide range of international experts and stakeholders. Today, the  UN Chronicle proudly continues that mission as the digital magazine of the United Nations.
